In Candleshoe, Harry Bundage wants to rob the treasure of Lady St. Edmund (Helen Hayes). He seeks the help of Casey Brown (Jodie Foster) to find the treasure. Casey pretends to be the long-lost granddaughter of Lady St. Edmund. When Casey gains entry into the house, she discovers that contrary to her believes; Lady St. Edmund is almost bankrupt and has no money. The Lady lives with her faithful butler Priory (David Niven) and three orphaned children who love her dearly. The children and the butler do all the household work to ensure that the Lady continues to believe that she is comfortably off and does not lose her pride in front to the rest of the world. The actor playing the role of Priory plays a number of roles in the movie such as the butler, gardener and a major.
